What are you moving, and how far?
Midpoint: $5,000. Packing and peak timing are added below the base range, not hidden in it.
Planning estimate only, not a quote. Long-distance movers price by weight and mileage, local movers by hours and crew. Get at least three written quotes, check the mover's USDOT number, and ask what is included: fuel, stairs, long carry, packing materials, and insurance. Basic coverage is only $0.60 per pound per item by law, full-value coverage costs extra.
Published ranges this tool uses
National average for a local move is around $1,250, and about $4,300 for a long-distance move in one 2026 guide, with a studio across town under $500 and a 4-bedroom cross-country move over $10,000. Another 2026 source puts the average at $1,692 local and $4,401 long-distance.
| Home size | Local, under 100 mi | About 1,000 mi |

Local hourly rates in 2026 are published at $120 to $180 per hour for two movers and a truck, $160 to $240 for three, and $200 to $300 for four. Full packing adds about $200 to $500 locally and $500 to $2,000 long-distance. Peak summer, weekend, and month-end moves can cost 20 to 40 percent more, while off-peak midweek moves in winter can cost 20 to 30 percent less.
Why quotes differ so much
- Local = hours and crew. Long distance = weight, mileage, and delivery window.
- Stairs, elevators, long carry from truck to door, and tight parking all add fees.
- Packing, storage, piano or pool table moves, and insurance are usually separate line items.
- Summer and month-end demand spikes, winter midweek demand drops.
Questions to ask every mover
- Is this a binding, non-binding, or binding not-to-exceed quote, in writing?
- What is your USDOT number, and what insurance is included?
- What triggers extra fees on moving day?
- What is the delivery window for a long-distance move, not just the pickup date?
Why this niche, in plain terms
This is the first tool in the portfolio that is not Houston and not home repair. Moving is national, it happens year-round with a summer peak, the ticket is $1,000 to $15,000, and people search for a cost calculator before they search for a mover. That combination, big search pool, big ticket, calculator-friendly inputs, is exactly what makes a free tool worth building. It does not tie into Domin8 Online, it does not need a local partner, and it can be sold later as a standalone asset.
